The main goal of the National Diabetes Organization, DiaLeb, is to promote awareness about diabetes. It is important that people are educated about the signs and symptoms, the risk factors and the treatment so they are able to prevent and manage diabetes. To this end, DiaLeb has developed a series of programs under which it works to provide awareness to different segments of the population and efficiently reach those at risk of or living with this disease. DiaLeb also offers community support groups, and patient training, an internship program for nutrition students, and engages in numerous social activities, all with the aim of promoting diabetes awareness and enhancing the lives of those affected by and living with the disease.
Diabetes in the Classroom
There is no better learning medium than the classroom, and DiaLeb acknowledges that the classroom is one of the best media to promote awareness. Thus, its School Lecture Series and University Lecture Series are core programs in DiaLeb's awareness efforts. DiaLeb works in collaboration with different schools and universities throughout Lebanon to put together educational events with guest speakers from the medical and nutrition fields and motivational speeches from current diabetes patients in order to promote better lifestyle choices and healthy habits. Through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, free diabetes testing is provided for those in attendance atmost of the events.
Community Awareness Program
Through its Community Awareness Program, DiaLeb partners with municipalities across Lebanon to put together educational events with guest speakers from the medical and nutrition fields and motivational speeches from current diabetes patients in order to promote better lifestyle choices and healthy habits. Through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, free diabetes testing is provided for all in attendance.
Special Speaker Events
Diabetes increases the risk of developing many other health complications. However, with the proper precautions, medical team and treatment many of these can be managed and even avoided. To bring light to these issues, different speaker events focused on special topics relevant to diabetes are put together by DiaLeb in different venues and locations throughout the country.
Community Internship Program
DiaLeb, in collaboration with the Lebanese American University (LAU) and the University of Balamand (UOB), has begun a community internship program. Students graduating in the field of nutrition take part in an internship at DiaLeb, which lasts 3 to 4 weeks for each student. During this time, the interns are exposed to community service and learn how to operate and manage a not-for-profit association. In addition, they are able to expand on their knowledge by engaging in research and providing DiaLeb with ideas for enhancing its community outreach strategy and programs.
Diabetes Conversation Map™
DiaLeb in collaboration with the diabetes educators of Lilly Diabetes is organizing patient education sessions using the highly interactive Diabetes Conversation Map Tool. Diabetes Conversations is a patient-focused program developed to improve patient understanding, self-management and enhance patient-healthcare professional interaction. The Diabetes Conversation Maps are highly visual and interactive diabetes educational tools created by Healthy Interactions in collaboration with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and sponsored by Lilly Diabetes.
The content of the tool is disease-specific and therapeutic-class focused. That means it is non-promotional in respect to any product brands. The Diabetes Conversation Map has been launched in more than 100 countries and is available in more than 35 languages. The tool has been endorsed by health authorities across the world and in the Middle East Region as well.
Student Training Sessions
DiaLeb has begun providing lectures to university students in the field of nutrition. The goal of these sessions is to specifically focus on dietary needs for diabetes patients, including insulin ratio calculations and more importantly advanced carbohydrate counting. This is not something which is mandatory in the curriculum and as such provides students with important knowledge to help them manage their future diabetes patients.
To promote awareness about the organization and bring to light the importance of exercise and healthy living in preventing and managing diabetes, DiaLeb participates in the Beirut Marathon. Every year DiaLeb partners with an educational or corporate institution and provides it with presentations and materials regarding diabetes. In addition, free glucose testing is providing to all runners who pass by the DiaLeb booth.
Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner
In order to raise funds for its operations and programs, DiaLeb hosts a yearly Fundraising Gala Dinner. The Gala Dinner takes place every November, as it is world diabetes month.
